Keladi Nayaka Kingdom

Keladi is the name of the village. Nayaka equates to Leader.

The kingdom had its humble beginning as Nayakas of Keladi in the year 1499 CE at Keladi village,  Chowdappa Nayaka & Bhadrappa Nayaka. They were an important ruling vassal dynasty in post-medieval Karnataka during the reign of the famous Vijayanagara empire.

Later they shifted to a new capital at a nearby village of Ikkeri at around 1512 CE for strategic reasons in terms of security from natural landscape and resource abundance from the forest region.

They were an Indian dynasty based in Keladi in present-day Shivamogga district of Karnataka, India. After the fall of the empire in 1565, they gained independence and ruled significant parts of Malenadu (meaning, regions of the hills) region of the Western Ghats in present-day Karnataka, most areas in the coastal regions of Karnataka and the central plains along the Tungabhadra river. They established their independent kingdom at the Bidanuru village (now Nagara) where they built a robust stone fort. It was the last capital until the kingdom collapsed at 1763 CE.
